Newcastle is undergoing a digital transformation, with City Fibre developing a full fibre network which will reach almost every residential and business in the city. This network will make Newcastle one of the most digitally connected cities in the UK.
What does this mean for Businesses?
The old aging copper-based legacy networks will be replaced with gigabit capable full fibre connectivity. A full fibre network is currently only available to 11 percent of UK premises, so this will put Newcastle on the map as a leading city for connectivity. By replacing the copper cables with fibre optic cables, users will experience significantly superior and robust broadband services, capable of Gigabit speeds (1,000 Mbps). Businesses will now benefit from Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) instead of just Fibre to the Cabinet (FFTC)
What is FTTP?
For businesses FTTP means that your broadband is delivered purely via fibre optic cables providing ultrafast broadband access directly from your Internet Service Provider. In short, data is sent over the fibre at precise intervals by a laser. The innovating aspect about a purely-fibre connection is that millions of pieces of data can be sent every second and a high-speed connection is therefore part and parcel of FTTP. This network gives upload and download speeds in the UK that surpass older technologies.
How does this differ from FTTC?
Fibre to the Cabinet uses the same optical cables as FTTP right up to the street cabinet, and then from the cabinet (exchange) uses the existing copper telephone line, known as a PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), to connect the cabinet to the premises. Because of the copper/fibre optic blend, FTTC is less expensive to install however it lacks the ultrafast connectivity speeds that come with FTTP.
What are the benefits of FFTP to Businesses?
- Ultra-Fast Connection – Super fast Wi-Fi connection which will ensure that your networks are running consistently.
- Increase productivity – Slow internet connection can result in your employees not being able to access information. Investing in faster FTTP can increase productivity in the office in the form of allowing for cloud access, downloading materials, and accessing networks
- Reliability – FTTP has also been recommended by Ofcom as having a “reliable and consistent connection”, offering strong reliability to run SIP across too.
